For companies, it is important in today's world to develop steadily and to be ahead of the competition one or more steps ahead. Accordingly, it is not surprising that market leaders invest heavily in research and progress. According to PricewaterhouseCoopers, companies alone invested over 615 billion euros in research and development in 2016 alone. With around 59 billion euros, Germany is at the top of the list in Europe. The list of the top ten most innovative companies in the world includes American companies as well as Asian and European companies.

The top ten companies that invest in research

Tenth place is occupied by Japanese car maker Toyota. With 8 billion euros, Toyota invests around 3.7 percent of sales in research. At 8.1 billion, the American consumer goods manufacturer Johnson & Johnson follows ninth place. That is still 13 percent of the revenue generated for the development of more advanced ideas. Seventh and eighth places in the list are two Swiss companies, which not only combine nationality. Both are major pharmaceutical companies and invest almost 20 percent of their sales in the Research & Development division.
At Novartis in the eighth place, this is about 8.6 billion euros and Roche at the seventh place around 9 billion euros. Places six, five and four are not a big surprise.
